Role of Poetic Translations in Promotion of Urdu Language

Abstract

 Translation is great source of getting access to the latest  literary trends and ideas of  the modern world. According to Goethe, translation is one of the most important and valuable activities in this world. Poetic translation is the act of translating a literary work into another language with all its artistic qualities. Translations are also the most effective means of access to scholarly and literary assets in modern times. John Gilchrist began his literary translation in Urdu by translating selected sections from two of William Shakespeare's plays. Poetic translation in Urdu began with the most famous poem "Gore Ghariban" written by Nazam Tabatbai in 1897. Risala “Makhzan” played major role. Allama Iqbal also increased the treasure of Urdu literature by translation of the poems in Urdu. After 1947, many other poets like Tassaduq Hussain Khalid, Sajjad Baqir Rizvi, Shaanul Haq Haqi, Noon Meem  Rashid, Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi and Amjad Islam Amjad showed their skills in translation from different languages like Arabic, Persian, Russian, Chinese, French. In current era, Poetic translation is still playing an effective role in the promotion of Urdu literature. This article describes in brief the history of poetic translation and important role of translation in promotion of Urdu language and literature.
