Abstract

The political and social conditions of the subcontinent, particularly during the time of the First War of Independence in 1857, had a profound impact on Urdu poetry. This research paper explores how the tumultuous events of the uprising, along with the subsequent British colonial rule, influenced the themes, expressions, and stylistic choices in Urdu literature. The paper analyzes the works of prominent poets such as Allama Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib, examining how the social unrest, oppression, and the struggle for freedom were reflected in their poetry.

The study underscores the shift in poetic sensibilities from the pre-1857 era to post-1857, where themes of resistance, nationalism, and identity began to dominate the literary discourse. The political instability, British imperialism, and the socio-cultural transformation of the subcontinent triggered a period of intense reflection among poets, resulting in poetry that not only responded to the immediate events of the time but also contributed to the broader national consciousness.

Furthermore, this paper highlights how Urdu poetry became a medium for articulating the pain, hope, and aspiration of a society in the midst of colonial subjugation and the quest for independence. Through an in-depth analysis of poetic forms, symbols, and metaphors, this research demonstrates how Urdu poetry served as both a tool of resistance and a source of cultural preservation during one of the most critical periods in South Asian history.
