Abstract

Dormant words in Urdu are those that have gradually fallen out of common usage or have become rare, yet they remain an integral part of the language’s cultural, linguistic, and literary heritage. This research examines the causes of their dormancy, their historical and social background, and the possibilities of their revival. The study analyzes Urdu dictionaries, classical and contemporary literary texts, and the evolutionary phases of spoken language to determine the factors that led to the decline of these words. Furthermore, it explores potential methods for their reintegration into modern Urdu, such as through literary works, academic curricula, and digital media. The objective of this study is not only to preserve the linguistic richness of Urdu but also to cultivate awareness and interest in the language among Urdu speakers
